Cold Call Scam:

 

 We have become aware of a scam taking place and would like to pass on this information to you

Over the past week or so we have received a number of calls from concerned customers regarding telephone calls they have had from someone claiming to be Microsoft. The caller usually says that your Microsoft warranty is about to expire and offers a one off payment to extend or renew your warranty, they will then ask for credit card details, then ask for remote access to your machine.

 

 The call is a scam!

 

 The official Microsoft response is that they NEVER cold call customers, to receive a call from Microsoft YOU have to open a service ticket first. As for the Microsoft Warranty, Software (windows / Office Etc) is not warranted, Hardware (keyboards / Mice Etc) are, but over £200 to extend a warranty on a keyboard is a little excessive!

 

 I have today been made aware of a variation by one of our customers as follows:  

Thank you for this - I too received 3/4 messages/calls about a month ago from a call centre claiming to be Microsoft and that we had illegal Microsoft licence which could only be sorted out if we sat at the computer immediately and let them take us through the process. I refused to do this and informed them that I viewed this as a scam and then put the phone down on them.  
Slightly different variation but I am sure that I would have been asked for money had I followed instructions.

 

 In short, If you have received a call from ‘Microsoft’ and given them any card or bank details contact your bank or card issuer, If you get a call from these people do not give them any details.
